Information on How to Connect to the Network (Internet)

In order to gain access to the network, please follow these steps: 

  1.  Configure your operating system to obtain an IP address automatically (DHCP)
  2.  Plug your device in to the data port on your wall with an Ethernet Cable.  (The data ports are usually black.) Once your device is plugged in, open a web browser and navigate to http://resnet.rutgers.edu. Follow the instructions provided on the site to connect to the Network.

Configuring your operating system to obtain an IP automatically

Please follow the instructions below based on your operating system:


Windows Vista

  1. Go to Start > Network. Click on Network and Sharing Center.
  2. Click the View status hyperlink located to the right of Local Area Connection.
  3. Click the Properties button.
  4. If Windows prompts you, enter an administrator password and click OK. If you are already logged on as an administrator, simply click the Continue button.
  5. Uncheck the box for Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6).
  6. Double-click on Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4).
  7. Select or check that the radio buttons for Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically are checked.
  8. Click OK to save the changes and close the window. Click OK to close the Properties window. Click Close in the Local Area Connection Status window.

Windows 7 & 8/8.1

  1. Go to Start > Control Panel.  Click the Network and Internet hyperlink.
  2. Click the Network and Sharing Center hyperlink.
  3. Click the Change adapter settings hyperlink located on the left side.
  4. Right click Local Area Connection.  Click on Properties.
  5. Uncheck the box for Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6).
  6. Double-click on Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4).
  7. Select or check that the radio buttons for Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically are checked.
  8. Click OK to save the changes and close the window. Click OK to close the Properties window. Click Close in the Local Area Connection Status window.

Windows 10

  1. Click on the Search Windows Bar > Search Network and Sharing Center. 
  2. Click the Network and Sharing Center.
  3. Click the link for Local Area Connection.
  4. Click on Properties.
  5. Uncheck the box for Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6).
  6. Double-click on Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4).
  7. Select or check that the radio buttons for Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically are checked.
  8. Click OK to save the changes and close the window. Click OK to close the Properties window. Click Close in the Local Area Connection Status window.

Mac OS X

  1. From the Apple menu, select System Preferences. Select Network (Under Internet and Network). NOTE: Authentication may be required via the lock icon in the lower left corner.
  2. Select Ethernet on the left menu.
  3. Set Configure on the right screen to Using DHCP.
  4. Click the Apply Now button, then quit the System Preferences application.
