ResNet Wired & Wireless Setup

How do I get connected to the wired network?

Plug one end of your Ethernet cable into the Ethernet port on your computer. Plug the other end into the Ethernet jack in the wall. The jack is usually black, and the faceplate is labeled with a number and the letter "D"." Follow the instructions on how to find your MAC Address and use the ResNet Device Registration portal to get your device connected.

Where can I purchase networking cables?

Ethernet cables are available to Camden, Newark, and New Brunswick students at the kite+key Rutgers tech stores, and local electronics stores.

There are more residents assigned to my room than there are available Ethernet ports. How can everyone connect to the Internet?

In most cases, there is one Ethernet port available to each person residing in each room, i.e., singles have one port per room, doubles have two ports per room, etc. In rare cases, two or more students are placed in a room originally designed to house only one student. Students who are in rooms that contain only one accessible Ethernet port can obtain/request and use an Unmanaged Switch to connect multiple devices.

Can I connect more than one device to the wired network in my room?

Although you can only connect one device per port to the wired network at a time, there is no restriction on the total number of network devices in a room. Residents who want to use more wired devices than there are ports would be required to disconnect the current device and then connect the new device to the same Ethernet port. You would have to follow the instructions via the ResNet Device Registration Portal for any new devices as well.

If you need to have multiple wired devices connected at the same time, and you do not have enough ports in your residence, you may use an Unmanaged Switch to expand the number of available ports.

Wireless routers are not permitted in residence halls, as they interfere with RUWireless.

How do I set up my console gaming system on the network?

Ethernet is the preferred method to set up a game console. If you wish to use a console on the network, follow the instructions on how to find your MAC Address and use the ResNet Device Registration portal to get your device connected.

I got a new computer or device. What do I need to do to get connected?

For laptops, phones and tablets, please refer to the instructions on how to connect to RUWireless Secure. For all wired desktops and smart devices, follow the instructions on how to find your MAC Address and use the ResNet Device Registration portal to get your device connected.

Can I connect more than one device to the wireless network in my room?

There is no limit to the number of wireless devices you can connect to RUWireless Secure at a time.

Can I set up my wireless printer in my room?

Wireless capabilities of personal printers are not supported, but you can still connect with a USB cable in order to print.

Can I set up my own wireless network or wireless access point in my residence hall?

All Rutgers residence halls offer full RUWireless coverage. As a result, ResNet does not support the wireless feature for personal routers, as it interferes with the RUWireless signal for other residents. If you are unable to connect to RUWireless in your room due to poor coverage or believe RUWireless does not cover your residence hall, please get in touch with your OIT Help Desk for assistance.

Are there any devices that will not work on RUWireless Secure?

If your device does not support the RUWireless Secure installer, you may use the ResNet Device Registration portal to get your device connected. These devices include wired desktops, game consoles, handheld game consoles, smart TVs, and smart assistants. Please note that some devices may experience reduced functionality on the Rutgers wireless network compared to your home wireless network.

Additionally, some devices are not supported on our residential wireless networks in any capacity. These devices include:
