Why is there a wireless access point in my room?

What is a Wireless AP?

A wireless Access Point (AP) is a networking hardware device that allows Wi-Fi devices to connect to a network. They are used to provide network connectivity in large buildings and spaces. They make sure that everyone at Rutgers – students, teachers, and staff – can get a good wireless internet connection through the RUWireless network, wherever they are in the building.

This is a Cisco Aironet 2600 series Wireless Access Point that is deployed in Rutgers Buildings to provide wireless internet access.

Why is it in my room?

To ensure that the equipment is able to service full coverage and multiple devices, some wireless access points are permanently installed within dorm rooms and apartments. These access points cannot be moved or removed as they are strategically placed to successfully service all residents.

If you have any questions or concerns about having the wireless devices in your room or apartment, you can contact Residence Life at (848) 932-4371 or resident@rutgers.edu for more information.

If you have any questions or concerns about wireless signal exposure, please see the FCC webpage for Wireless Safety information.
